The year of double harvest carries a clear call and a clear promise. Zechariah 9:12 says, “Return to the stronghold, You prisoners of hope. Even today I declare That I will restore double to you.” Isaiah 61:7 adds, “Instead of your shame you shall have double honor, And instead of confusion they shall rejoice in their portion. Therefore in their land they shall possess double; Everlasting joy shall be theirs.”
This is a plea with a promise. God is calling prisoners of hope to return to the fortress, and He has already announced the double portion.
Planting is not easy. There is proper timing. There is careful choice of seed. You cannot plant just anything. Farmers know they must secure the best seed for the harvest they desire. Some will miss the timing. Some will be asleep when the season arrives. Some will not be sensitive. If you miss the timing, the whole process is disrupted. Every season comes for a reason. When the season comes and you do not act, the season passes. The word of double harvest has been hovering over us since January. Some have not yet decided to risk putting the seed into the ground. Some hold back because the seed seems expensive. Preparation is required.
Genesis 8:22 declares, “While the earth remains, Seedtime and harvest, Cold and heat, Winter and summer, And day and night Shall not cease.” Seedtime and harvest will never cease while you are alive. The danger is missing the timing and being insensitive to the season.
Psalm 126:6 says, “He who continually goes forth weeping, Bearing seed for sowing, Shall doubtless come again with rejoicing, Bringing his sheaves with him.” Planting involves going out, sometimes weeping, carrying seed. It is not easy. Many distractions try to stop the first step. Yet the one who goes out will return with songs of joy and sheaves.
The soil of the heart must be prepared so it can sustain the seed. There must be water. There must be weeding, for weeds will compete for the nutrients. Insects and pests come to destroy. You may plant the best seed, yet still need to protect and cultivate it. Without careful tending you may end up with double loss instead of double harvest.
Look at Gideon in Judges 6. Israel had sinned. For seven years the Midianites oppressed them. Whenever the Israelites planted, the enemy ruined the crops. Gideon, a mighty man, was hiding, threshing wheat in a winepress to keep it from the Midianites. Sin had driven him into hiding. When the Angel of the Lord appeared and called him “mighty warrior,” Gideon answered with excuses and questions. Sin produces insecurity, excuses and lack of faith. God hates robbery and iniquity; He loves justice. We must monitor the state of our seed and the condition of our hearts.
The season of double harvest is here. Be sensitive. Prepare the ground. Plant intentionally. Protect and cultivate what you have sown. Deal with sin and excuses. Return to the stronghold as a prisoner of hope, and receive the double portion God has already announced.
Application
Do not let this season of double harvest pass you by. Examine the condition of your heart and the state of the seed you are carrying. Prepare the ground, plant in faith, weed out distractions and sin, and tend carefully what God has given you. Act while the season is open, and expect the double portion He has promised.
