Rev. Gerrald Kimathi Sunday Service on the 10th day of May 2026
In this year of double harvest, God emphasises the importance of maintaining healthy and strategic relationships. The story of Lazarus, Mary, and Martha reveals three fundamental relationships that every believer must nurture.
In John 11:1-5 (NKJV): “Now a certain man was sick, Lazarus of Bethany, the town of Mary and her sister Martha. It was that Mary who anointed the Lord with fragrant oil and wiped His feet with her hair, whose brother Lazarus was sick. Therefore the sisters sent to Him, saying, ‘Lord, behold, he whom You love is sick.’ When Jesus heard that, He said, ‘This sickness is not unto death, but for the glory of God, that the Son of God may be glorified through it.’ Now Jesus loved Martha and her sister and Lazarus.”
The first fundamental relationship is with Jesus — the Lord whom you love and who loves you. Mary had encountered Jesus in her brokenness, poured out her oil, and wiped His feet with her hair. From that point, she maintained a close connection with Him. When trouble came to the family, they knew exactly whom to call: “the one you love.” Your relationship with Christ must be personal, intimate, and evidence-based, not distant or formal.
The second fundamental relationship is with family — your immediate brothers and sisters in the natural and in the faith. Mary and Martha did not face the crisis alone; they stood together with their brother Lazarus. Family provides support, shares burdens, and joins in faith when needs arise. On this Family Day, we are reminded of the power of unity and togetherness in the house of God.
The third fundamental relationship is with friends — kingdom friendships like the one between Jesus and this family. Jesus was not a blood relative, yet He was deeply connected to them. He called Lazarus “our friend.” These relationships are built on love, trust, fellowship, and mutual support. True friends stand with you in crisis and celebrate with you in victory.
When Lazarus fell sick, the sisters reached out to Jesus because of the quality of their relationships. Jesus delayed, but the delay was for God’s glory. The relationships remained intact, leading to a greater miracle — the resurrection of Lazarus. Healthy relationships position us for divine intervention and multiplied harvest.
Application Intentionally nurture your relationship with Jesus through consistent intimacy, worship, and dependence on Him as the One you love and who loves you. Strengthen family bonds — both natural and spiritual — by standing together in unity, sharing burdens, and supporting one another in faith. Cultivate kingdom friendships that are rooted in love, trust, and mutual encouragement, so that in times of need you have reliable connections. In this year of double harvest, maintain these three fundamental relationships so that God’s glory can be revealed powerfully in your life and circumstances.
