This message is timely for the year of double harvest. God’s word never returns void; as Isaiah 55:11 declares, it accomplishes His purpose. The focus is breaking spiritual barrenness into fruitfulness through unbroken connection to Christ.
Jesus teaches in John 15:1-8 (KJV): “I am the true vine, and my Father is the husbandman. Every branch in me that beareth not fruit he taketh away: and every branch that beareth fruit, he purgeth it, that it may bring forth more fruit. Now ye are clean through the word which I have spoken unto you. Abide in me, and I in you. As the branch cannot bear fruit of itself, except it abide in the vine; no more can ye, except ye abide in me. I am the vine, ye are the branches: He that abideth in me, and I in him, the same bringeth forth much fruit: for without me ye can do nothing. If a man abide not in me, he is cast forth as a branch, and is withered; and men gather them, and cast them into the fire, and they are burned. If ye abide in me, and my words abide in you, ye shall ask what ye will, and it shall be done unto you.”
Fruitfulness demands abiding in the vine—Jesus. A branch disconnected withers; so does a believer who severs fellowship. Connection happens through prayer as communication with God, studying the word which is God Himself, and relating intimately with the Holy Spirit to discern His promises and will. Spiritual dryness begins when prayer and the word are neglected, leading to stagnation in ministry, family, and personal walk.
Imagine a phone: without power or network, it is useless. Reconnect it, and it functions fully. Believers must stay plugged into Christ for power. When someone disconnects, help them reconnect rather than provoke. Those who provoke the barren—like Peninnah to Hannah—must repent and support those waiting on God.
Persist in prayer and faith. The parable in Luke 18 illustrates the widow who kept pleading with the unjust judge until he granted justice. Persistence prevails. Hannah in 1 Samuel 1:10 (KJV) prayed in bitterness of soul and wept sore, yet she poured her anguish to God, not others. The Holy Spirit aids in Romans 8:26-27 (KJV): “Likewise the Spirit also helpeth our infirmities: for we know not what we should pray for as we ought: but the Spirit itself maketh intercession for us with groanings which cannot be uttered. And he that searcheth the hearts knoweth what is the mind of the Spirit, because he maketh intercession for the saints according to the will of God.”
The Spirit intercedes according to God’s will; God searches hearts and understands intentions beyond human judgement. Trust God above visible reality. Like a farmer watering seeds with no sprouts yet visible, persist—fruit will come.
Surrender to God’s purpose. John 15:7 promises that abiding in Him and His words aligns desires with His will for fulfilment. Hannah vowed in 1 Samuel 1:11 (KJV): “And she vowed a vow, and said, O Lord of hosts, if thou wilt indeed look on the affliction of thine handmaid, and remember me, and not forget thine handmaid, but wilt give unto thine handmaid a man child, then I will give him unto the Lord all the days of his life, and there shall no razor come upon his head.”
She surrendered her blessing—Samuel—back to God, turning personal fruitfulness into public blessing for Israel. Surrender prevents stagnation; a pond breeds mosquitoes, but a flowing river brings life. Confess barren areas, remain connected, persist in prayer, and release requests to God’s greater purpose. He will visit and multiply, as He did for Hannah in 1 Samuel 2:21 (KJV): “And the Lord visited Hannah, so that she conceived, and bare three sons and two daughters. And the child Samuel grew before the Lord.”
Call on the Lord in pain and bitterness. He is the Shepherd who provides, restores, and opens spiritual wombs at the appointed time. His word will accomplish fruitfulness.
Application Remain steadfastly connected to Christ through consistent prayer, study of the word, and fellowship with the Holy Spirit to prevent spiritual dryness and enable fruitfulness. Persist in faith-filled prayer even when circumstances appear unchanged, trusting the Spirit’s intercession aligns your requests with God’s will. Surrender every personal desire and blessing back to God for His greater purpose, allowing private breakthroughs to become rivers of life that bless others and multiply. Confess areas of barrenness openly, release bitterness to God alone, and expect His visitation to break stagnation into abundant harvest in this season.
